MDCell mediums were developed in order to eliminate animal proteins of serum. The MDCell range consists of medium with low quantities of foetal bovine serum whose performances are comparable to conventional mediums that had 10% foetal bovine serum and mediums without any animal protein (MDCell free).
During the stages of adaptation of cells to the cell culture without serum, these are weakened. This is the reason why one is advised to take a lot of precautions during this stage. This transition phase requires progressive reduction of the quantity of serum in the medium. Thus by starting from conventional medium (EMEM, DMEM?) and going up to 10% Foetal Bovine Serum, the quantity of serum in the MDCell medium is reduced at each stage in the following manner: 2, 1, 0.5, 0.25, 0.125, 0.06, 0.03 and 0 % of foetal bovine serum. Therefore, one must count 8 changeovers so that your cells are completely weaned and can endure the medium without serum.

The different cell lines have their own requirements. This is the reason why MidiMed has developed specific products for different cell lines. These are available in the MDCell range and their formulations vary simply in terms of amino acids, vitamins and strength or concentration of salts (Optimizer*).
